કીર્તન મુક્તાવલી
(૧) શીદને રહીયે રે કંગાલ રે સંતો
મોહમયીમાં અમૃતમેઘ
એકાદશીએ બપોરે સ્વામીશ્રી મુંબઈ પહોંચ્યા. કપોળ વાડીમાં ઉતારો હતો. અહીં સ્વામીશ્રીએ સૌને કથાવાર્તાનો સારો લાભ આપ્યો. પતિવ્રતાની ભક્તિની વાત કરતાં સ્વામીશ્રી કહે:
“એક રાજાને એક વાઘરણ રૂપાળી હતી તે ગમી. લગ્ન કર્યું, પણ જાતની વાઘરણ છે તે ખબર નહિ. આ રાણીને બત્રીસ પ્રકારનાં ભોજન આવે તોય ખાય-પીવે નહિ. રાજા મૂંઝાણા કે રોગ થયો છે કે શું?
“પછી વૈદ્યને બતાવ્યું. તે હોશિયાર હતો. તેણે થાળ લઈ જતી દાસીને કહ્યું કે, ‘થાળ લઈને વયું જાવું, પણ ત્યાં બેસવું નહિ.’ બીજે દી’ એમ કર્યું.
“આ રાણી થયેલી વાઘરણને માગી ખાવાના હેવા પડ્યા હતા. એટલે તૈયાર ભાણું આવે તેમાં મૂંઝાય. પણ આજે કોઈ નો’તું, તે બારી-બારણાં બંધ કર્યાં ને લૂગડું ફાડી ઝોળી બનાવી. સાવરણીની સળી ભાંગીને દાતણ કર્યાં ને ઓરડાના ગોખલે-ગોખલે થોડું થોડું ખાવાનું મૂકી આવી. પછી ઝોળી ખભે ભરાવી ગોખલે-ગોખલે જાય ને બોલે, ‘દેજે, મહાલક્ષ્મી! બટકું રોટલો...’ એમ કહીને સળી ગોખલામાં મૂકીને ત્યાંથી ખાવાનું લઈને ઝોળીમાં નાખે ને તેમાંથી ખાતી જાય. એમ પાંચ શેર ભાર ખાઈ ગઈ.
“મહેલમાં ખબર પડ્યાં કે રાણી સાહેબ જમ્યાં. રાજા ખુશ થઈ ગયા ને વૈદ્યને કહે, ‘લો બે હજાર રૂપિયા ઇનામ. પણ તમે શી દવા કરી તે કહો.’ વૈદ્ય કહે, ‘કહેવા જેવી નથી.’ એને થયું કે રાજા સાહેબ જાણશે તો ઉપાધિ થશે. ત્યાં રાજા કહે, ‘દવા બતાવો. કાલે વળી રાણી સાહેબ માંદાં પડે તો કેમ દવા કરવી?’ વૈદ્ય કહે, ‘વૈદ્યનાં છોકરાં રળી ખાશે. (બીજા વૈદ્ય દવા કરશે.) માટે એ વાત રહેવા દ્યો.’ પણ રાજા તો હઠે ચડ્યા. તે કહે, ‘દવા નહિ કહો તો જેરબંધ† કોરડે મારીશ.’ પછી વૈદ્યે કહ્યું. ને બીજે દી’ થાળ ગયો ત્યારે રાણીએ વાઘરણવેડાં કર્યાં, તે રાજાએ જોયું. રાજાને થયું: ‘આ તો વાઘરણ છે, નખ્ખોદ કાઢ્યું; આને કાઢો.’ પછી ઘર-લજામણી જાણી, મારીને કાઢી મૂકી.
“નિષ્કુળાનંદ સ્વામીએ કીર્તનમાં કહ્યું:
‘રાજાની રાણી ભમી ભીખ માગે, હાલે કંગાલને હાલ,
ઘર લજામણી રાણી જાણી રાજા, ખીજી પાડે તેની ખાલ રે સંતો...
શીદને રહીએ કંગાલ.’
“ભટકતી ફરે તો ચામડાં ઊતરે. તેમ સહજાનંદ સ્વામીની ઉપાસના મૂકી, બીજે ભમીએ તો ચામડાં ઊતરે. સ્વામિનારાયણના થઈ જ્યાં-ત્યાં સાંધા રાખશું તો બાપા (મહારાજ) ખાલ પાડી નાખે, ધામમાં પેસવા ન દે.
“સાચો સત્સંગ કરવો. ત્રણ પૈસાના ન થાવું. મહારાજ બહુ વાત કરતા. ‘તેમાં કષ્ટ આવે જો કોઈ...’ કોને કષ્ટ આવે? કો’કને? આપણા દેહને આવે. મારું નખ્ખોદ કાઢ્યું એમ ન બોલવું.”

(1) Shīdne rahīe re kangāl re santo
Showers of Amrut in the City of Infatuation
In the afternoon of an Ekadashi day, Yogiji Maharaj reached Mumbai. His accommodation was in Kapod Vadi. Swamishri gave the bliss of kathā-vārtā. Speaking about bhakti characterized by fidelity, Swamishri said:
“One king became attracted to a low-caste woman (who was accustomed to begging for food) and married her unbeknownst of her caste. The new queen was served 32 types of foods, yet she would not eat. The king became frustrated: did she develop an illness or what?
“He had a clever Ayurvedic doctor see her. He told the servants who brought her meals, ‘Leave the meals there and leave. Do not sit there.’ The next day, the servants did as advised.
“This low-caste who had become a queen had a habit of eating after begging for food. He was troubled by having food brought to her prepared in dishes. But today, there was no one. She closed the doors and windows and made a jholi (a cloth for collecting food that one begs for) by tearing a fabric. She cut the straws of a broom into pieces like dātan. She hid bits and pieces of food in the recesses of the walls. Then she set off with the jholi on her shoulder and went to each recess in the wall and yelled, ‘Maha-Lakshmi, please give me a piece of rotlo...’ Then, she would poke the food with the straws and throw them in her jholi and eat from the jholi as she went along each recess in her room. She ate a few kilos of food with this new routine.
“The people in the palace got news that the queen ate. The king became happy and gave the doctor a reward of two thousand rupees. ‘What medicine did you use to treat her?’ The king asked. ‘It is not worth knowing,’ the doctor replied, thinking that if the king finds out her caste, he would cause trouble. The king insisted, ‘Tell me the medicine. If she falls ill again in the future, what shall we do?’ The doctor replied, ‘Some other doctor will treat her. Therefore, let’s not delve into this.’ However, the king pressure the doctor, ‘If you do not tell me the medicine, I will beat you with a scourge.’ So the Ayurvedic doctor revealed the truth. The next day, when the queen’s food was served, the king peeked to see what she was doing. The king realized that she is a low-caste. He kicked her out lest she ruin his reputation.
“Nishkulanand Swami has written this in a kirtan:
Rājānī rāṇī bhamī bhīkh māge, hāle kangālne hāl;
Ghar lajāmaṇī rāṇī jāṇī rājā, khījī pāḍe vaḷī khāl re... santo 2
The king’s queen wanders begging for food and still carries herself like a poor woman. The king realized she would bring shame to his name and let her go.
“After seeking refuge of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and yet if we still have ties elsewhere (affection for minor deities), then he will not let us in his Akshardham.
“One should practice pure satsang. Maharaj used to speak on that a lot. ‘Temā kashta āve jo kāi..’ (If one encounters any adversity...) Who encounters adversity? Someone else? No, our own body. At that time, one should not say: ‘God ruined me.’”

(૨) શીદને રહીયે રે કંગાલ રે સંતો
પૂરણ બ્રહ્મ એટલે ગુણાતીત
સાંજે ઈશ્વરચરણ સ્વામી તથા નારાયણ ભગતે કથાનું વાચન કર્યું. રાતની સભામાં મૂળ માણાવદરના મુંબઈમાં રહેતા બચુભાઈ જાનીએ સ્વામીશ્રીના મહિમાનાં સ્વરચિત કીર્તનો ગાયાં હતાં. મોહન બગડ તથા પ્રમુખસ્વામીનાં વક્તવ્યો બાદ સ્વામીશ્રી આશીર્વાદમાં ‘શીદને રહીએ રે કંગાળ રે સંતો...’ એ પદનું ચરણ બોલતાં કહે, “નિષ્કુળાનંદ ભેળા રહેતા તો આ શબ્દ નાખી દીધો. ‘પૂરણ બ્રહ્મ’ એટલે ગુણાતીત; અને ‘પુરુષોત્તમ’ એ બે શબ્દ નાખ્યા.”

(2) Shīdne rahīe re kangāl re santo
‘Puran-Brahma’ Means Gunatit
At night, Ishwarcharan Swami and Narayan Bhagat read the kathā. In the evening sabhā, Bachubhai of Mumbai (native place Manavadar) sang kirtans he wrote extolling the greatness of Yogiji Maharaj. After Mohan Bhagat’s and Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s speeches, Swamishri sang the line ‘Shidne rahiye re kangāl re santo...’ and said, “Nishkulanand Swami used to stay together (with Maharaj and Swami) so he included these words (i.e. ‘Puran-Brahma’ and ‘Purushottam’. ‘Puran-Brahma’ means Gunatit and ‘Purushottam’ (means Maharaj) - he included these two words.”
